2005 Syrah This vintage of Syrah, our third, was again made from the young vines at La Ribera Vineyards. This wine was hand crafted in a style similar to the full-bodied Syrahs of the northern Rhone Valley of France. The grapes were cold-soaked for 48 hours to allow for color and flavor extraction, and spent a total of 3 weeks on the skins before pressing. The wine aged for 15 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Immediately apparent is the inky-black color, a sure sign of a dense wine. The aromas are complex, showing blueberry and blackberry, followed by vanilla, leather and spice. Good acidity keeps the wine from being overbearing, and makes it a great match with roasted game, pasta or steak.
