2004 'Old Vine' Zinfandel Husch's Zinfandel was harvested from 55 year-old vines at La Ribera Vineyards. The gnarly head-pruned vines are part of the original plantings on the banks of the Russian River. These aged vines only yield two tons per acre but the resulting wine shows the wonderful complexity of old vine Zinfandel. Hand-selected clusters were gently crushed and de-stemmed. We cold soaked the wine for three days to allow the juices to extract flavors and colors from the grape skins. Because Zinfandel fermentations are notoriously challenging to complete, we fermented the wine in a small tank where we were able to carefully control the fermentation temperature. Once the primary fermentation was complete we transferred the wine to barrels for malolactic fermentation and nine months of American and French oak aging. Before your first sip you will notice the brilliant garnet color of the wine. The nose is fruit-forward with berry, plum and currant complemented by nuances of spice and toasty oak. The mouthfeel is rich and broad on the mid-palate and offers firm but fine tannins on the finish. Try with our Scharffen Berger Cocoa Wafers for a delightful after-dinner course.
